I/O hosting requires a hosting partition – boot not permitted

After Installing VIO Server, you try to boot from DISK and you face the following Error :

boot device: /pci@800000020000207/fibre-channel@0/disk@5005076303239005,4000400b
00000000:2

I/O hosting requires a hosting partition - boot not permitted.
EXIT called ok
0>

and this mean that you stop on OK Prompt

and this error happens because of 3 Reasons:

First, you don’t have the virtualization Activation Key and you don’t entered it, so you need to contact you Support.

Second, you need to check the Firmware level and also the take the recommendation from IBM Support.

The Last thing and this what happened to me, from HMC and when i go to create a new LPAR  i choose AIX or Linux instead of VIO Server and you can check that by open the properties

menu from HMC and the environment value like the following image:

VIO

you test something else, on the OK Prompet, write ‘boot disk’ if you get “error message” you will be on the first 2 Reasons, if you get an output, then i guess you need to check you LPAR profile

like the third reason.

i will be happy if you have and other reasons and share your knowledge with me.

have a great day… 🙂
